Their heads hacked from their graceful bodies, these tragic pictures show the fate of tigers in the brutal hands of poachers.

The photographs, released by police this morning, show officers displaying the heads and carcasses of tigers seized from a truck in Hua Hin , Thailand – a popular tourist resort.

Police seized tiger carcasses weighing up to 250 kilograms from a truck passing through Hua Hin, in the Prachuap Kiri Khan province.

Tragic: The bodies and heads of the poached tigers are displayed

The tigers were believed to be smuggled from Malaysia and on their way to China, police said.

Two Thai men have been arrested in connection with the smuggling, police said.

A tiger can see for around £800 – but, broken into body parts, their value can soar to £26,500.

With profits so high, traffickers are usually armed and ready to do battle – and China is one of the world’s biggest markets for tigers.

Last month Malaysia, where the tigers were believed to have been captured, announced plans to step up its protection of the rare creatures.

Numbers of Malayan tigers have dropped in Malaysia from 3,000 to 500 in the past half-century mostly because of illegal hunting and the human encroachment.

Tiger meat is exported, served at exotic restaurants and used in traditional Chinese medicine.

It is illegal to kill tigers in Malaysia however – and the World Wildlife Fund was optimistic that the new 12-year plan to step up protection of the big cats, once voted the world’s favourite animal, will help boost their population.

The new plan seeks to double the population from 500 to 1,000 by 2020 – but it still must be implemented at state level.

Wong’s note:
It is truly sad every time I come across this kind of news. Please read my blogs about poaching activities in Malaysia to learn more about the desperate issue. In addition, please help us sign a petition that design to help to reduce poaching in this country.

As I said over and over again, I strongly believe that every successful raid of a poaching case represent a staggering number of poaching cases that no one know. We need to act now to stop this kind of killing. Poaching and consuming of game meat is not a Malaysian culture and the poaching of wildlife is absolutely not necessary and should be stop before it went out of control. Please help us to stop wildlife being killed for no reason and please help us to stop sun bear being poached for whatever reason. I really hope BSBCC can do more to educate the public about sun bear and other wildlife and wildlife habita so to reduce this kind of killing of tigers, sun bears can keep in minimum if not complete stopped. I hope one day we will never hear of any tiger or sun bear being poached in this country because local people knows more about them and start to protect them, and not because of there are no tiger or sun bear in this country anymore!

This is absolutely unbelievable. One of those animals is not a tiger,…what is it? It looks like an ocelot!

This is too horrible for words.. It’s such a disgrace how humans treat all living things. As consumers we should refuse to buy chinese products until they do something about this illegal animal parts trade. I have made that decision already a long time ago, but we need more people to start putting pressure on chinese government to put stop to this awful practise!

One of those animals was a clouded leopard, possibly the rarest cat in the world. There are so few left in the wild that they can’t even be counted. It seems the only people who find them are poaches. Clouded leopards are extinct in Taiwan, where they were hunted for their enormous canine teeth that are used as decoration or ground up for the ubiquitous fertility potions. Their flesh is served to wealthy customers in restaurants in Taiwan, China, and other parts of SEA.

Poachers should be shot on sight. If that were the punishment, I’m sure we’d see a decline in poaching.

Shocking. It is governments, east and west, that stand back and allow this to happen. And China is emerging as a leader of barbaric practices across the entire planet. Not only shocking, but the very sad face of humanity… or should i say lack of it.

God sometime for the tiger’s sake I just wish they would go extinct — to STOP this horrible stuff –
then the idiots would have NONE for their stupid-non-humane
medicinal – wonder what they will sell when they have no more to poach! I jsut get so sick of hearing numbers like this 3,000 to 500 and they STILL do this –
    I guess they can’t count?

Trying to see through my tears and type a comment is impossible. Seeing these photos is stomach wrenching. I agree with Pirjo that we ALL should boycott anything made in China, but that is impossible since so much is made there. I am forwarding this to my Asian friends and ask them to comment. I find it hard to believe that the ‘younger’ generation of Asians believe in the old practices of their elders. Who is buying the medicine that is made from animal parts? What kind of people gets their kicks from eating tiger meat? The same goes for the sun bears!!

Brigitta – I agree with you – I hate them also.

Actually it’s quite possible to boycott chinese stuff. I just haven’t bought any clothes, shoes etc. for some years if I’m not sure of their origin. With electronics it’s more difficult, but then I have kept the old stuff. Lots of things are still made in Europe and in USA if you just make an effort to spend some time looking around the shops. I’m very serious about this and we should consider the possibilities to do something about this disgusting and horrible practise.

Tigers are a vital part of our world and our environment. It would be unfortunate if they are eliminated from our world. I hope that measures are taken to enforce the laws -

Please see my next blog for my additional comments.
Yes, Sheryl is right. That smaller cat on the right was a clouded leopard. They are indeed very rare and little known.

Some one, NGO, large organization, even a country, should start a campaign to address this wildlife poaching issue to the China government so that this kind of killing and wildlife consumption be stopped at no time. If we fail to do so, we will fail to protect our wildlife, our forest and ourselves!

What about an internationally well known petition site such as Avaaz? They could be interested to launch a global petition if we have provide them with all the info etc. There are also other petition sites, which could be approached. Then there is WSPA.

  15. Posted January 16, 2009 at 11:45 am | Permalink

    Hi Pirjo,
We sure can seek help from Avaaz. They are great. If internation conservation NGOs such as WWF, WCS, Traffic, WildAid, WSPA, CI, etc, would like to joint force to put up this petition then the voice is even larger and effective I think.

These poachers are scum. They just think of getting rich quickly. Until people stop eating animals and treating them like things without feelings, this kind of thing will continue. You can be outraged at the sight of murdered tigers but if you eat animals you possess double standards.

I think we should shoot the poachers and cut there heads off and sell and display in windows for fun and lets see how they feel about it. Tigers have feelings and family to you know
    SAVE THE TIGERS.

Its very tragic, but don’t you think blaming it on the asian is taking this a little bit too far. Just because i’m asian it doesn’t mean that i agree on the killing of tigers or want them gone. Its not the chinesse nor the asians, its the smuggler, poachers, and those who buys it, not the whole race. Even though a majority of chinesse are involved, don’t say everyone is. By saying what most of you just said makes you no different than a hater.- i don’t mean to hurt anyone just giving my opinions, don’t feel offended-

Pirjo…you are so right, people SHOULD stop buying chinese products, i wish i knew what to do to let everyone know. And Changer Chong, you’re being blamed because it’s YOUR country and your government could do so much more. You have such a bad reputation for killing beautiful animals, i hate you! you don’t deserve to live on this planet!

God created all creatures big, and small, animal,or human. The only thing that should be killing these animals is old age. I pitty all the poachers who kill animals, because someday they will have to answer to GOD. There judgment day.
